Why Friends Are Sometimes Unreliable?

by BiotechAusway 29 Jul 2026

Few social frustrations are as familiar as making plans with someone who sounds enthusiastic, only to receive a last-minute cancellation—or no message at all—when the arranged time arrives.

This habit, often called "flaking", can leave friends feeling inconvenienced, dismissed, or unsure whether the relationship matters equally to both sides.

The reasons behind it are rarely simple.

Sometimes, a person who fails to follow through is careless or poorly organised; at other times, the problem reflects deeper patterns in personality, communication, and the increasingly effortless ways in which modern technology allows people to withdraw.

Psychology professor Richard Koestner has suggested that individuals who are lower in conscientiousness or agreeableness may be more likely to overbook themselves and less inclined to consider the effect on others.

Conscientious people generally plan ahead and take promises seriously, whereas agreeable people are more attentive to other people's feelings and less willing to create unnecessary disappointment.

Yet a cancelled arrangement is not always a sign of selfishness.

Some people say yes because refusing feels uncomfortable, especially when they fear seeming rude, disappointing a friend, or starting an awkward conversation; later, once the event feels closer and the pressure becomes real, they may retreat rather than admit that they never wanted to go.

Technology can make this retreat remarkably easy. A short text, an unread message, or a click on a "not attending" button removes much of the social friction that once came with cancelling in person or making an uncomfortable phone call.

Digital entertainment may also shape expectations. When social media, games, and streaming services offer instant rewards at home, meeting people face to face can appear slower, more demanding, and less predictable by comparison, particularly after a tiring day.

It becomes tempting to choose the option requiring least effort, even when that choice quietly shifts burdens onto another person.

There may even be a generational element. A 2017 study found that 45% of American millennials saw nothing especially wrong with backing out of social plans, while older adults were generally less likely to withdraw from invitations they had already accepted.

Still, explaining the behaviour does not erase its impact. Repeatedly cancelling at the last minute can disrupt schedules, damage trust, and make others feel that they are merely a backup option rather than a valued friend.

Psychologists therefore recommend direct but considerate communication. Kurt Gray of the University of North Carolina advises a phone call, arguing that hearing another person’s voice can restore a sense of human connection that text messages often flatten.

Andrea Bonior of Georgetown University similarly suggests telling a friend, without accusation, that sudden cancellations create practical problems and can make someone feel undervalued.

The goal is not to win an argument, but to make the emotional cost visible and to set clearer expectations for the future.

At the same time, compassion matters. Life coach Kira Asatryan notes that people sometimes withdraw not because they do not care, but because anxiety, sadness, exhaustion, or stress has made social contact feel overwhelming.

The healthiest response may combine honesty with flexibility.

Friends should try not to promise what they cannot realistically deliver, and those who feel let down should speak openly before resentment builds; reliable relationships are strengthened not by perfect attendance, but by respect, clarity, and genuine concern when plans change.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
