Should You Use A Sleep Tracker?

by BiotechAusway 21 Jul 2026

Nearly half of Americans and around 40% of Britons now rely on smartwatches, rings, apps, or other wearable devices to monitor their sleep.

These gadgets promise to give users insight into their nightly rest by tracking movement, heart rate, and even skin temperature. Many hope that such constant monitoring can help them understand sleep patterns more clearly.

Yet this widespread use has potential downsides. Overanalyzing sleep data can create anxiety, a condition researchers call orthosomnia, in which concern about poor sleep ironically makes falling asleep harder.

Although users believe they are gaining control over their nights, excessive attention to metrics can backfire, causing restless nights and stress.

Some devices also overstate their precision, especially when estimating sleep stages, which can further mislead users.

Despite these issues, sleep trackers retain significant value. Studies show that wearable devices reliably distinguish sleep from wakefulness, helping people realize whether they are truly getting enough rest.

By providing objective feedback, these gadgets encourage users to adopt healthier bedtime routines. Surveys indicate that over half of adults who use sleep trackers report changes in behavior that improve sleep quality.

For many, simply becoming aware of sleep duration is enough to foster better habits.

Ultimately, sleep trackers illustrate both the promise and the limitations of technology in daily life. While devices cannot replace the natural cues your body provides, they can complement awareness and help you prioritize rest.

The best measure of a good night's sleep remains straightforward: waking up feeling genuinely refreshed.

By balancing data with intuition, users can harness technology without letting it control their sleep, turning a potentially stressful habit into a helpful tool.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
