Do Winners Really Never Quit?

by BiotechAusway 08 Sep 2026

An experienced marathoner has recently been wrestling with an uncomfortable question: should the training stop only one month before race day?

The timing makes the idea sound almost absurd. Months of effort have already been invested, the finish line is close, and quitting now seems likely to invite regret.

Yet the decision deserves more than a reflexive appeal to endurance, because it raises a broader question about what science actually says about giving up.

For years, the runner lived by a simple rule: never quit. That philosophy had produced impressive results, including five marathons, a dissertation, and a book.

There is undeniable satisfaction in doing the work, trusting the process, and eventually crossing a literal or figurative finish line.

Persistence can turn ambition into achievement, and few experiences feel more rewarding than discovering that discomfort was temporary while progress endured.

This time, however, the situation feels different.

The problem is not a lack of motivation, nor doubt about the ability to do hard things. Instead, competing demands have accumulated, while the body no longer seems to recover as reliably as before.

Running has long served as therapy, offering space to think, release pressure, and regain emotional balance.

During the current training cycle, many difficult days have improved after miles on the road.

That is precisely why the choice is so complicated: running has remained part of the solution, yet it may also have become part of the strain.

For some people, perseverance is not the hardest skill to learn. The greater challenge is recognizing when perseverance has stopped being wise.

Modern culture celebrates grit. People are repeatedly told that winners never quit, and substantial research supports the value of sustained effort.

Pushing through discomfort in pursuit of meaningful goals can strengthen resilience, deepen confidence, and expand a person's sense of what is possible.

In sport and in life, perseverance often matters enormously.Science, however, reveals the other side of the coin.

Healthy self-regulation is not limited to persistence, optimism, or mental toughness; it also requires the ability to notice when a goal has become unattainable, harmful, or no longer worthwhile, and then to redirect energy toward something more valuable.

Across multiple studies, people who can disengage from unworkable goals and reengage with new ones tend to report better psychological well-being, lower levels of distress, and, in some cases, improved physical health compared with those who persist at any cost.

This does not mean abandoning every goal when difficulty appears. The point is to ask not only, "Can this continue?” but also, "Should it continue?"

A goal may once have been meaningful and still cease to serve the person pursuing it. Recognizing that change is not weakness. It is judgment.

Recovery offers a useful comparison. Progress does not occur despite recovery; it occurs through recovery.

Muscles strengthen, attention sharpens, and resilience returns when the body and mind are given room to repair.

Goals may work in a similar way. Relentlessly chasing one objective can consume the time, health, and energy needed for more important commitments.

Wisdom sometimes lies not in endurance, but in careful redirection.

Perhaps the decision should not be framed as quitting at all. It may be better understood as letting go. The final choice remains unsettled and will be made after the next long run.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
