What do you think most people need for their peace of mind? A secure job? Affordable healthcare? Easy access to necessities like food, groceries or medicine?
Now, if you could pay a certain sum to guarantee those things, how much would you be willing to pay?
A recent survey conducted by Talker Research, which interviewed 2,000 Americans in March, explored this idea in greater depth.
Participants were asked to estimate how much money they would be willing to pay annually for different forms of security, using a scale ranging from $0 to $100,000.
The results reveal a striking willingness to sacrifice income for stability.
On average, respondents said they would pay $19,800 per year if they were guaranteed job security, while $16,400 was the amount they would spend to avoid worrying about medical bills.
Additionally, they would be willing to pay $21,000 for uninterrupted access to essential goods, which highlights how deeply financial anxiety shapes daily life.
Altogether, this amounts to $57,200 annually, which is nearly three-quarters of the average salary of $79,000 among participants. This indicates that many individuals would, in effect, exchange most of their earnings for psychological comfort.
Nearly half of the respondents reported that they already spend money on "peace-of-mind" services, such as refundable tickets, while 41% admitted that financial constraints prevent them from doing so.
Moreover, 17% said they worry about money every single day, which underscores the intensity of economic pressure.
Experts say that although we can't buy peace of mind, we can handle difficult times better by looking after our mental health — doing things like exercising, spending time in nature, and not spending too much time reading negative news!
